Norovirus Passengers Sue Royal Caribbean For £500,000

A group of British passengers who suffered from what appears to be the somewhat common complaint of norovirus has launched a claim for £500,000 worth of compensation against Royal Caribbean

The 25 passengers travelled on five different sailings on Independence of the Seas between December 2010 and June 2011.

According to Wales Online, complaints from the 25 passengers include flies in their bathrooms, a waiter blowing his nose on a napkin that was then placed on a table, poor cabin cleaning, dirty cutlery and undercooked food.

The claim further details how Royal Caribbean failed to remedy the outbreak by adopting adequate cleaning and sanitation, or greater control in the preparation of food and drink.

Those who became ill, the report says, also complained there were not enough medical staff to help those in isolation, meaning long waits for visits from the doctor, and medical staff failed to follow hygiene procedure such as washing hands and wearing gloves.

Norovirus is one of the most common illness next to the common cold, and is highly contagious, spreading easily in confined spaces like hospitals, hotels, dormitories and cruise ships. Symptoms include vomiting and diarrhea, and millions are infected each year.

Royal Caribbean points out in a statement provided to Cruise Critic that 67,000 guests sailed on Independence of the Seas between the dates specified, mainly without incident, and even of the 25 making a claim, not all fell ill. Those that did fall ill, the statement continues, responded to the medication they were given and were not therefore referred for further treatment by the ship's medical team.

Regarding the breaches of hygiene detailed in the claim, the statement says: “Our crew conducted extensive cleaning on-board the ship and guests were kept up to date on these additional measures prior to embarkation and throughout their cruise. Guests were also provided with advice and information on preventative steps and good hygiene, including hand washing and making use of hand sanitizers that we provided throughout the ship.”

Experienced cruisers are usually philosophical about norovirus and there are numerous discussions on the Cruise Critic message boards about its cause and control.

Disney Cruise Ship Damaged by Hurricane Sandy

(10:31 a.m. EDT) -- Shattered glass doors, smashed crockery and ruined merchandise were just some of the damage sustained aboard Disney Fantasy as it raced alongside Hurricane Sandy en route to Port Canaveral last week.

Reports of the damage and harrowing journey began emerging October 28, when passengers just off the sailing took to the Internet.

"The final night of the cruise was terrifying," commented Claire Stopher on a Staten Island Live article about Disney's private island, Castaway Cay. "The damage that was done to the stores, bars and ship was stunning the next morning and very sad."

The damage is visible on a video posted by CNN reader tneyedoc2020 whose experience was highlighted in a CNN blog entry. He wrote: "By 12:00 a.m. Saturday, the ship was being tossed in every direction… Around 2 a.m., there was a violent tossing of the ship from side to side and most of the furniture was overturned in our room. All of the glassware was shattered as it hit the ground… Shortly after, the most intense moments, the ship's captain announced that all passengers should remain in their rooms. The two upscale restaurants (Palo and Remy) had major damage."

Disney Cruise Line downplayed the damage, though. "Overall, the ship is fine and is currently out sailing a seven-night Western Caribbean voyage. We had minor damage involving some cracked windows and some furniture damage that we have addressed," Rebecca Peddie, manager of public affairs for Disney Destinations, told Cruise Critic.

China defends patrols near disputed islands

BEIJING - (AP) -- China on Wednesday defended its increasingly assertive patrolling near disputed East China Sea islands controlled by Japan, as tensions in the area continue to run high.
The actions constitute "routine patrols and law enforcement in China's territorial waters around the Diaoyu Islands," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said at a regularly scheduled news conference.
"This was a normal official activity intended to exercise jurisdiction. This deserves no criticism," Hong said.
That followed an encounter Wednesday between ships from the Japanese Coast Guard and China Marine Surveillance near the islands, known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China. Each side broadcast their claim of sovereignty to the other and the brief incident ended when the ships dispersed, Japan said.
Hong's statement came as Beijing announced several days of intense naval exercises in the Western Pacific involving seven ships commanded by the missile destroyer Harbin. The coordinated actions set several new precedents for the Chinese navy involving anti-submarine warfare, precision attack, and other sophisticated maneuvering, state broadcaster CCTV reported.
While apparently unrelated to the feuding with Japan, the drills come as Beijing is flexing its maritime muscle to assert its claims in the South China and East China seas.
China has sent ships into the area on numerous occasions since Japan's nationalization of some of the islands in September. China also canceled its scheduled attendance at a defense forum inTokyo this week along with other exchanges to show its pique.

Eurotunnel purchase of Sea France ferries faces inquiry

Eurotunnel's purchase of assets from the former ferry operator Sea France is to face an inquiry over worries the deal could reduce competition and raise fares for cross-Channel travellers.

MyFerryLink ship
Ferry services under the MyFerryLink brand began in August this year

The acquisition has been referred to the Competition Commission by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT).
Sea France went into liquidation in November last year, and Eurotunnel bought assets including three ships.
These ships now operate between Dover and Calais under the MyFerryLink brand.
Eurotunnel leases the ferries to MyFerryLink, which is operated primarily by former employees of Sea France.
Eurotunnel already operates the Channel rail tunnel, and runs the Le Shuttle services.
In referring the deal, the OFT noted that, prior to its liquidation, Sea France had been a "close competitor" to Eurotunnel.
"Although some competitors remain after the merger, the evidence available to the OFT indicates that only P&O will provide a strong competitive constraint to Eurotunnel for some customers."
Amelia Fletcher, OFT chief economist and decision maker in this case, said: "We are concerned that the merger could further strengthen Eurotunnel's position in the market for cross-Channel transport and prices could go up as a result.
"As such, we believe it is appropriate that the Competition Commission reviews this merger in detail to ensure that the interests of consumers and industry are protected."
Eurotunnel said that its purchase of Sea France's assets followed the decision of a French court. It also added that the French competition authority is looking into the deal and is finalising its analysis.

HMS Bounty: the inside story of its final days

The HMS Bounty left New London, Conn., on Oct. 25 for a sail to St. Petersburg, Fla. It went due east to try to avoid hurricane Sandy, but the crew was mistaken in thinking the danger had been skirted.

The HMS Bounty was apparently headed to a public appearance in St. PetersburgFla., when it sank Monday off the coast of North Carolina amid the howling winds of hurricane Sandy.
Fourteen of the 16 people aboard the replica tall ship were rescued by Coast Guard helicopters. Crew member Claudene Christian was pulled unresponsive from the water and later pronounced dead at a North Carolina hospital.
Ship captain Robin Walbridge remained missing as of midday Tuesday. According to the Coast Guard, Walbridge went overboard when the ship rolled from the impact of 18-foot waves.
Coast Guard assets, including a 225-foot cutter, an HC-130 aircraft, and an MH-60 helicopter continued to search for Walbridge, as the water temperature in the area is nearly 80 degrees F. If properly clad in a survival suit, someone could survive in such an environment for a considerable length of time, Coast Guard officials say.
According to information posted on the HMS Bounty’s Facebook page, the wooden ship recently underwent a month of painting and structural refurbishment at Boothbay Harbor Shipyard in Maine.
The repairs involved were minor, involving some bottom work and planking, new spars, and new fuel and water tanks, according to an account of the work posted on the shipyard’s website. Five years ago, the same facility rebuilt the ship from the waterline up. Several years prior to that,Boothbay Harbor Shipyard crafted the Bounty a new bottom.
The current work on the ship was finished Oct. 18. On Oct. 21, the Bounty left Boothbay for a stop in New LondonConn. On the 25th, the ship went for a day sail in Long Island Sound carrying US Navy personnel.
The tall ship left New London later that same day for a sail to St. Petersburg, Fla. According to a Facebook post, the 25th was also Walbridge’s birthday.
The ship was scheduled to dock at The Pier in St. Petersburg for a public appearance on the weekend of Nov. 10-11. St. Petersburg had served as a winter home for the ship in past years.
The ship’s course out of Connecticut took it due east to try to avoid the oncoming hurricane Sandy. Early on Sunday, the crew felt it had skirted the danger: A Facebook post showed the ship’s position on a map well to the east of the storm’s fiercest winds.
They were mistaken. The ship was close to the tail end of the hurricane as it whipped up the Atlantic coast.
Details about the ship’s final hours remain sketchy. Apparently at least one generator failed, and the Bounty began taking on more water than it could safely handle.
The official Coast Guard account states that a search aircraft was dispatched from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City following a distress call Sunday evening. Upon arrival at the ship’s location, the aircraft established communication with the crew. At that time the vessel was reportedly sinking in 18-foot seas and 40-mile-per-hour winds, says the Coast Guard account.
Rescue did not commence until daylight. By that time, the crew had split between two inflatable 25-person life rafts, which looked like large floating saucers with a cover. Neither Ms. Christian nor Walbridge made it into the life rafts.
The rescue involved Coast Guard divers leaping into the ocean and guiding the survivors, one by one, into a basket for hoist upward to two helicopters. Video of the rescue is very dramatic and a testament to the courage of Coast Guard personnel.
“Thank you to everyone for your support and prayers at this devastating time. We want to thank the USCG for their bravery and risking their lives to save ours,” the HMS Bounty Foundation said in a statement.

High dollar takes wind from sails

Award-winning boatbuilding industry is facing a contracting market and a strong currency raising local prices.

New Zealand boat builders are savvy and determined but the strong kiwi dollar is making it difficult for exporters to remain competitive and the marine sector is clashing with the Government over the problem, an industry group boss says.
Two New Zealand superyacht makers have received prestigious awards in the United States this month.
The 30m Antares III, built by Yachting Developments in Hobsonville, took out the Best Sailing Superyacht award in the 24-40m category at the International Superyacht Society Awards, in Fort Lauderdale.
And the 67.2m Vertigo, manufactured by Henderson's Alloy Yachts, took out the award for Best Sailing Superyacht over 40m.
Yachting Developments also won the Best Refit award for its refurbishment of Endeavour, a classic 1934 America's Cup J Class.
NZ Marine Industry Association executive director Peter Busfield said local superyacht makers had managed to pick up some market share during the tough times since the global financial crisis. But the dual impact of a contracting total market and a strong New Zealand dollar made for a very challenging environment to operate in, he said.
Busfield said the high dollar, which was trading above US82c yesterday, was making it more difficult for manufacturers to offer competitive pricing.
"The market is declining and prices of goods from New Zealand are increasing - it's a double negative really."
Busfield said the industry was "at loggerheads" with the Government over its failure to take steps to address the dollar's strength.
The industry wanted the Reserve Bank to cut the official cash rate, the relatively high setting (2.5 per cent) of which encourages buying of the kiwi dollar, pushing up its value.
Opposition parties and unions are also putting pressure on the Government over the high dollar and the effect it is having on manufacturing. The Government, however, has labelled the Green Party's suggestion that quantitative easing - essentially printing money - could lower the dollar's value a "snake oil solution".
Prime Minister John Key said this month that the manufacturing sector was not facing a crisis.
In the past four years the sector contributed between 11.7 per cent and 11.9 per cent of GDP - it wasn't growing massively but it wasn't in decline, Key said. "There is not a crisis in the manufacturing sector," he said.
"It's just tough on some businesses."

Russian ship with 700 tons of gold ore goes missing off Pacific Coast

MOSCOW — A vessel with a nine-person crew and 700 tons of gold ore onboard has gone missing in stormy seas off Russia’s Pacific Coast.
The ship sent a distress call on Sunday as it was sailing from the coastal town of Neran to Feklistov Island in the Sea of Okhotsk.
The vessel, hired by mining company Polymetal, was carrying 700 tons of gold ore from one deposit to another where it was to be processed. Gold ore is the material from which gold is extracted and contains only a small percentage of the precious metal.
Polymetal’s spokesman on Monday would not estimate the value of the cargo.
The company said it has shipped ore via that route before, and there was nothing unusual in shipping it by the sea.
