Silversea to launch third cruise ship

Cruise: A third ship for Silversea
Silversea has operated the Silver Explorer in Antarctica and the Arctic since 2008

3:40PM BST 10 Sep 2013

Silversea (silversea.com) is adding a third ship to its Expedition fleet with the long-term charter of the 128-passenger Clipper Odyssey. The ship will be renamed Silver Discoverer and start sailing in March 2014 following a multi-million-dollar makeover. Built in Japan in 1989, the vessel has 64 outside suites, ranging from rooms with portholes to cabins with balconies. Silversea will add a gym, pool grill and small spa. Lounges and dining areas will be brought up to six-star standards and bathrooms updated.
For the first three years at least the ship will be based in the Pacific in summer and South East Asia in winter, visiting remote islands in the Russian Far East and the New Zealand Sub-Antarctic and cruising in the Western Australia’s Kimberley region. In 2015 it will also sail in the South Pacific.
Silver Discoverer will sail with an 11-strong expedition team, two dive masters for guided expeditions (not in the Russian Far East, Kimberley or Sub-Antarctic), and snorkelling equipment and wetsuits for all. The ship will carry a glass-bottomed boat alongside 12 inflatable Zodiacs.
Silversea has operated the Silver Explorer in Antarctica and the Arctic since 2008, and starts seven-night island-hopping cruises in the Galapagos on board Silver Galapagos this month.
